Mainstream Baptists from Oklahoma to Visit Texas Baptist Convention Mainstream Oklahoma Baptists are making plans to attend the annual meeting of the Baptist General Convention of Texas in Dallas on October 29-30, 2001. The Mainstream organization is chartering buses and reserving hotel rooms for those who would like to attend a meeting where Mainstream Baptists are welcomed and respected. Over the past ten years the leaders of the Oklahoma Baptist Convention have made it clear that full participation by Mainstream Baptists is unwelcome. They gladly receive our money but contend that our beliefs make us unfit for service. In three different votes last year the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma voted to reject the convictions of Baptists who adhere to the 1963 Baptist Faith & Message (BF&M) confession. The Oklahoma convention endorsed the 2000 BF&M which espouses doctrines that are “unconscionable” to Mainstream Baptists. It elevates the Bible above Jesus, redefines “soul competency,” denies the priesthood of every believer, reduces the role of the Holy Spirit as a guide for every believer, undermines congregational autonomy, endorses males supremacy in home and church, and makes the BF&M a binding creed — “an instrument of accountability.” Last year Texas Baptists reaffirmed the 1963 BF&M and opened the convention to full participation by Mainstream Baptists from other states. For Baptists who would like to visit the annual meeting of Texas Baptists, here’s a preliminary itinerary: Transportation to Dallas from Norman, with a stop for passengers at Ardmore, will be provided by the Mainstream organization for those who would like to leave the driving to us. Meals and lodging will be on you. We’ll stop for lunch near Dallas before we arrive at the convention. The block of rooms we have reserved for the night of Monday October 29th are $99 for either a single or a double room. We also plan to attend the annual Texas Baptists Committed breakfast on Tuesday, October 30th. (Texas Baptists Committed is the name of the Mainstream organization in Texas.) Tickets for the breakfast will probably be around $20 per person. We’ll head back to Oklahoma at mid-morning on Tuesday. If you plan to attend, call our office at 1-800-676-3541 before September 28, 2001. |
