MAINSTREAM MESSENGER

Vol. 2, No. 4     September 1999

The Laity of the Land

By Bob Stephenson

Other than the BFM revision, the big issue before the upcoming Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) is the expansion of the Falls Creek Assembly.

As a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Norman I am well aware of the importance of this ministry.

“Preacher” Hallock, who served as our pastor for 46 years, was a key leader in the growth of Falls Creek.  I doubt there is any church in Oklahoma that has had more people influenced by Falls Creek than our church.  For that reason all of you who can get away are encouraged to attend the state convention.  Come as a messenger, if possible, so that you can take part in the deliberations.

It appears the BGCO folks have prepared an excellent program that will give you the history of Falls Creek and their vision for expansion.  The 34 million dollar cost is a big leap and that is why all who can should come as a registered messenger, listen prayerfully to the pros and cons of the debate and then vote your conscience.

This is the Baptist way and as a longtime Baptist and often critic of the state leadership I would like to publicly commend them on what appears to be a well-planned convention.
