NAMB Engaging in False AdvertisingFirst we learned that the Salvation Army was using contributions intended for the poor to retain a high paid lobbyist in Washington, D.C. Then we discovered that the Red Cross was diverting funds donated to help the families and victims of the attack on the World Trade center. Now we are hearing that the Southern Baptist Convention’s North American Mission Board (NAMB) misrepresents the number of missionaries that it supports. Promotional literature for the Annie Armstrong missions offering claims that the NAMB supports more than 5100 missionaries. A missions study committee of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, however, has discovered that NAMB fully funds the work of less than sixty (60) home missionaries. Only about 1750 people are employed as missionaries and receive a little funding from NAMB. Many of those only receive insurance or retirement benefits from NAMB and the bulk of their support comes from churches, associations, and state conventions. The rest of the people NAMB is counting are volunteers or spouses whom many would not really consider as missionaries.
