MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 2, No. 5 November 1999 Editor: Bruce PrescottResolution Affirming the Unlimited Atonement Whereas, the Bible teaches that Christ died for every person (Romans 5:18; 2 Corinthians. 5:14-15; Colossians 1:19-20); And whereas, the Bible teaches that God desires the salvation of every person (1 Timothy. 2:3-4; 2 Peter 3:9); And whereas, the Bible teaches that “whosoever” believes in Jesus Christ shall be saved and that “whosoever” does not believe in Christ is condemned already (John 3:16-18; Romans 10:13; Revelation 3:20); And whereas, some professors in SBC seminaries are advocating the doctrine of limited atonement that asserts that Christ did not die for every person and that God does not desire the salvation of every person; And whereas, an increasing number of Baptists are promoting the doctrine of limited atonement through the “Southern Baptist Founders Conference”; And whereas, at least one member of the committee selected to revise the Baptist Faith and Message statement is an advocate of the doctrine of limited atonement; Let it be resolved, that no Oklahoma Baptist University faculty member or Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma employee shall be required to affirm the doctrine of limited atonement. Let it be further resolved, that this Convention request that the editor of the Baptist Messenger print articles in the Baptist Messenger discussing the doctrine of the atonement, --- at least one article from an Oklahoma Baptist pastor advocating limited atonement and at least one article from an Oklahoma Baptist pastor advocating unlimited atonement, and that both articles discuss the implications of the doctrine of the atonement for evangelism and missions.
