MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 2, No. 5 November 1999 Editor: Bruce PrescottAssociations Differ in Handling Baptist Faith and Message Resolutions Last month Mainstream Baptists attempted to present resolutions affirming the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message at both the Capital Baptist Association (the Oklahoma City area) and at the Pottawatomie-Lincoln Baptist Association (the Shawnee area). On October 12th Jim Huff, messenger from Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, was allowed to present a resolution at Capital Association meeting during the time for miscellaneous business. A vote was taken by a show of hands with ten messengers voting to affirm the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message and forty-five voting against it. Darrel Witten, messenger and pastor from Romulus Baptist Church, was prepared to present a resolution in the form of a motion at the Pottawatomie-Lincoln Association meeting. Leaders of the association knew well in advance that he was prepared to make such a motion. The association’s by-laws state that “No member shall be heard without rising and addressing the moderator, and when recognized, then shall speak.” To preserve order and avoid disrupting scheduled business, associations traditionally set aside time for miscellaneous business at which time messengers are given an opportunity to rise, address the moderator and be recognized. At the October 24th meeting of the Pottawatomie-Lincoln Association no time was provided for miscellaneous business and Rev. Whitten was denied an opportunity to be heard. Rev. Witten’s treatment at the Pottawatomie-Lincoln Association is but another example in a long list of actions that serve to exclude Mainstream Baptists from Southern Baptist work in Oklahoma.
