MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 3, No. 1 December 2000 Editor: Bruce PrescottDirector Apologizes for "Outhouse" Remark Attempting to encourage Mainstream messengers to persevere in face of loss at the BGCO convention last November, I compared the task before us to running a race and said, “The Fundamentalists have the inside track, but it’s the inside track to God’s outhouse.” I never meant to use the image of an “outhouse,“ though I did intend to use the image of a “doghouse.” While I remain convinced that the Fundamentalists are on the wrong track, I now feel convicted that not only was the image of an “outhouse” unfortunate, but even the image of a “doghouse” would have been inappropriate. Both images treat persons for whom Christ died with less dignity than they deserve. Most grievous is the fact that my remarks served to undermine rather than promote conscientious dialogue among Oklahoma Baptists. I hereby publicly apologize to all Oklahoma Baptists for the lack of respect that was reflected in my remarks. Bruce Prescott |
