MAINSTREAM MESSENGER

Vol. 1, No. 2    September 1998

Note:  The following excerpts come from the academic freedom policy at Louisiana College, a Baptist college in another conservative state.  Since Oklahoma Baptist University apparently has no such statement, this suggests what might be a reasonable policy for OBU.  Of course, it would be up to that faculty and administration to adopt such a statement.

Policy on Academic Freedom

A.  Background

The principle of academic freedom is deeply embedded in the American system of higher education.  This principle stems from the belief that truth is of such critical importance that its pursuit must not be restricted on political, religious, or other grounds.  Truth cannot be advanced if it cannot be pursued freely.

In keeping with its founding principles, both Christian and Baptist, Louisiana College functions on the basis of the proposition that all truth is one and that all truth is God's truth.  Religious liberty, priesthood of the believer, and soul competency are all terms that describe in different ways the freedom with which God has endowed his creation.  If the pursuit of truth takes place under the canopy of a commitment to God, no other external constraints are needed.

The only legitimate constraint is that which flows out of the deep sense of responsibility and professional preparation that mark the Christian faculty member.

B.  Policy

Louisiana College shall continue to adhere to the traditional and honored principle of academic freedom.  This means that, in the search for truth, the teacher is free to teach and conduct research, the student is free to learn, and the College is free to be an authentic educational institution, all within the Christian perspective.  The Board of Trustees, the Administration, and the Faculty shall be diligent in the protection and preservation of this principle.

C.  Guidelines

[Specific procedures are set out in subsequent parts of the policy.  The entire statement may be obtained from the office of the academic dean, Louisiana College]
