MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 3, No. 5 Sept. 2000 Editor: Bruce Prescott"Trust, but Verify" at BGCO Mainstream Baptists welcome signs indicating state Baptist leaders will not force Oklahoma Baptists to adhere to the 2000 BF&M. We believe these gestures should be received with trust. We also believe that former President Ronald Reagan was wise in thinking that rebuilding trust requires that we “trust, but verify.” That is why we are encouraging all Mainstream Baptists to have their church elect them as messengers and come to the annual Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma (BGCO) meeting that will be held at First Baptist Church in Edmond on Tuesday, November 14th. Mainstream Baptists plan to verify trustworthiness by asking Oklahoma Baptists to take actions to insure that employment and service for positions within BGCO, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the other institutions and agencies of the state convention are not limited to those who can affirm the 1998 or 2000 Baptist Faith & Message. If service and employment within BGCO and its affiliated institutions can be denied to those who cannot conscientiously affirm changes to the BF&M produced since the Fundamentalist takeover, the allegation that creedalism is being forced upon Baptists will be confirmed. |
