MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 1, No. 2 September 1998The Free Press for Oklahoma Baptists Editorial practices at the Baptist Messenger have frustrated several of us. We begin letters to the editor with a thanks or appreciation and continue with an unfavorable critique of some state or SBC action. The editor chops the letter off before the negative material begins -- giving a totally false impression of the letter writer's position. Then, of course, under Baptist Messenger policies, that letter writer is not to be heard from again for three months. Is this dishonest, manipulative journalism? Also, we wonder, why did the Baptist Messenger fail to carry the major news story about former President Carter's diplomatic ministry to Baptists in America. Jimmy Carter talked separately with groups of Baptists including SBC and CBF leaders. All parties signed a "declaration of cooperation" to work together on issues of peace, racial conciliation, and other common issues. They also agreed to pray for one another and to adhere to Paul's admonition in Ephesians 4:32, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." To most of us that sounds like "information that state Baptists need," which editor John Yeats promised he would not withhold from the pages of the Baptist Messenger. Has Yeats gone back on his word?
