FBC Norman establishes scholarship fund to promote Baptist distinctivesA generous couple donated money to launch a scholarship fund for high school and college students at First Baptist Church of Norman to receive scholarships as an incentive to study Baptist distinctives. To receive scholarships students must participate in 24 hours of classroom instruction and discussion on “Understanding Our Baptist Heritage: Baptist History and Distinctives” as offered by the Texas Baptist Laity Institute. On January 20th seven college students, three high school seniors, and two others began a course on Baptist Heritage led by Bruce Prescott, Executive Director of Mainstream Oklahoma Baptists. It is the first course offered by the Texas Baptist Laity Institute beyond the borders of Texas. Laity Institute classes are limited to a maximum of twelve participants who are required to pay $100 for tuition and about $50 for books. Every participant must covenant to attend all classes, read the assigned readings, participate in class discussions, and make a presentation to the class on what it means to be a Baptist. The Edgar and Zelma Hallock scholarship fund for members of First Baptist Church of Norman was created in memory of church members and former missionaries who served in Brazil for more more than forty years. Edgar was recently inducted into the Mainstream Baptist hall of fame. The fund is being administered by the Cooperating Baptist Fellowship of Oklahoma. Upon completion of the course, ten $1000 scholarships will be sent to the colleges or graduate schools chosen by the students and can be used for tuition, books, and/or housing. When the class is over, scholarship students will make presentations to Sunday School classes on what it means to be a Baptist. They will also make appeals for donations to replenish the scholarship fund. Three students are already on a list waiting for additional funds and for the next class on Baptist heritage. The first scholarship recipients will be Brittany Jones, Anne Malthaner, and Jennifer Morgan currently attending Norman area High Schools and John Abbott, Kevin Clark, Sarah James, Abbey Rugeley, Brad Stewart, Bret Thompson and Beth Vaughn currently attending the University of Oklahoma. |
