MAINSTREAM MESSENGER Vol. 3, No. 5 Sept. 2000 Editor: Bruce PrescottRobinson Wrong About Issue by Dr. Bruce Prescott In an editorial in the Sept. 21 issue of the Baptist Messenger, BGCO Convention President James Robinson said, “The issue in dispute with . . . Mainstream Baptists is whether the Bible as a whole is the Word of God, or whether the Bible only contains the Word of God.” He is mistaken if he thinks he’ll get an argument from me on this issue. I’ve never said the Bible “contains” the Word of God and you’ll not find such language on the pages of the Mainstream Messenger. It is precisely because I am so opposed to the thought that anything, including the Bible, can “contain” the Word of God that I am opposed to the 2000 BF&M.
I believe God is sovereign and free. God is not “contained,” “confined,” “restricted” or “limited” by anything but his own loving, triune person.
Mainstream Baptists readily affirm that the Bible as a whole is “totally true and trustworthy” and that it is the written “word of God.”
Those who affirm the 2000 BF&M are the one’s trying to confine, “contain” and restrict the Word of God to the Bible alone and that is wrong.
We do oppose that.
