Preach Baptist Distinctives

By Dr. Richard Kahoe

Now is an urgent time to preach and teach basic Baptist theology. With the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message under attack by Fundamentalist forces of the “New Southern Baptist Convention,” all Baptists need to review their convictions.

When I, as a lay minister, began to think about preaching a series on Baptist Distinctives, I realized that my background and immediate resources did not give me much to go on. Then an answer was literally placed in my hands. At a special meeting of Mainstream Baptist leaders across the south I got some resources that gave me some ideas for a series of sermons.

Here are some of the ideas for sermons or Bible study lessons:

The deity and lordship of Jesus Christ.

The doctrine of the trinity.

Salvation by grace through faith.

The security of the believer.

Believer’s baptism and church membership.

The symbolic understanding of baptism and the Lord’s supper.

The authority of the Bible.

Congregational church government.

The autonomy of the local congregation of believers.

Unity in diversity within New Testament churches.

Evangelism & Missions: The Great Commission.

Voluntary cooperation among New Testament churches.

Soul competency and the priesthood of the believer.

Religious liberty, rendering to Caesar and separation of church and state.
